Mickey Wright and Nancy Lopez
Discussion Question:
Mickey Wright was, by technical assessment, one of the greatest golfers of either sex who ever lived. Nancy Lopez was transformatively charismatic and commercially significant. Neither received anything close to the fame or financial reward that male players of comparable ability and impact received in the same era. What does this tell us about how value is assigned in professional sport — and about what factors beyond performance determine a player’s cultural significance?
Parent-Teacher Note:
The discussion question here is one of the most substantive in the entire Stage 3 curriculum. It asks your student to think about value — how it is assigned, what determines it, and whether the metrics we use are fair or complete. There is no simple answer. Encourage your student to sit with the discomfort of the question rather than rushing to a resolution.
