Augusta National Over Time

Your Case Study Task – Preparation for Week 3 Assessment

Research one specific hole at Augusta National that has been significantly modified since the original MacKenzie design. Your research should identify:

  1. What the hole looked like in its original form
  2. What specific changes were made and approximately when
  3. What the stated justification for the changes was
  4. Your own assessment: do you believe the changes improved the hole, compromised it, or produced a genuinely different hole that should be evaluated on its own terms?

Write your findings in 6-8 sentences. This will form part of your Week 3 assessment submission.

Parent-Teacher Note:

The USGA Museum and Golf Digest’s historical archives both contain good visual documentation of Augusta National’s evolution. Ben Crenshaw — a student of golf history and a Masters champion — has written and spoken extensively about the original MacKenzie design and the changes it has undergone. His perspective offers a useful counterpoint to Augusta National’s official institutional narrative.
