Women’s Golf History

Your Synthesis Task – Preparation for Week 5 Assessment

In your notebook respond to all three of the following questions:

  1. The lesson presents two different arguments about why women’s professional golf has received less prize money and television coverage than men’s professional golf. Summarize each argument in 2-3 sentences. Which do you find more persuasive, and why?
  2. Mickey Wright and Nancy Lopez both had transformative impacts on women’s golf but in very different ways. Compare and contrast their contributions — what did each one provide that the other did not? What does each type of contribution tell us about what professional sports organizations need to survive and grow?
  3. The founding of the LPGA in 1950 by thirteen professional players who organized and governed the tour themselves is described as “one of the most significant acts of organizational entrepreneurship in the history of American sport.” Do you agree with this assessment? What evidence from the lesson supports or challenges it?

Parent-Teacher Note:

The synthesis questions here are deliberately challenging. Question 1 asks your student to steelman both sides of a genuine debate — an important intellectual discipline. Question 2 requires comparative analysis of two historical figures. Question 3 asks for evaluative judgment about a historical claim. A student who engages seriously with all three is demonstrating exactly the analytical capacity that Stage 3 is designed to develop.
