Lesson 7.2: Public vs. Private Courses – Different Worlds
Public Courses are open to anyone who pays a green fee. Culture tends to be more casual. Caddies are less common. Call ahead and ask specifically whether they have a caddy program.
Private Clubs require membership. Members are generally more invested in the game and accustomed to high service levels. Private clubs are where caddy programs are most active, most structured, and most lucrative. Address members as “sir” or “ma’am.” Follow the caddy master’s instructions exactly.
Resort Courses serve hotel guests and fee-paying visitors. Often have formal caddy programs. Pay is often higher because guests expect a premium experience.
Semi-Private Courses have members but allow public play. Culture varies; ask about the caddy program specifically.
For your first caddy position, a private club with a structured junior caddy program is the ideal starting point. You’ll receive mentorship from a caddy master, training alongside experienced caddies, and access to a consistent membership base who will come to know you by name.
Identify 3-5 golf facilities within a reasonable distance of your home. For each, research: Is it public, private, semi-private, or a resort? Does it have a caddy program? Rank them in order of your preference and write one sentence explaining your reasoning for each.
