Lesson 4: Looking Ahead — What Stage 2 Will Bring
You have completed Stage 1 of Golf Course Design, Construction & Architecture. In six weeks you have learned to read the land, understand hole geometry, analyze hazards, appreciate the construction process, study famous designs, and create your own original hole.
In Stage 2 — Learn & Improve — the vocabulary deepens. You will study strategic design philosophy in detail, learning how architects like MacKenzie and Doak think about the relationship between risk, reward, and player experience. You will analyze green complexes in depth, study how technology has transformed the construction process, and produce a course analysis project for a real course.
In Stage 3 — Train to Compete — you will engage with the contested questions of architecture: the minimalism vs. maximalism debate, the sustainability crisis, the tension between historic preservation and championship preparation. You will produce original design proposals with full written justification.
In Stage 4 — Train to Win — you will produce a complete 18-hole design with routing plan, design philosophy statement, construction brief, and environmental impact assessment. This is the capstone of the entire four-stage curriculum — a genuine piece of architectural scholarship.
Stage 1 builds the vocabulary. Stage 2 develops the analysis. Stage 3 engages the debates. Stage 4 produces the scholarship.
