Lesson 4: Rules Protect Everyone

Stage 1 — Discover & Play  ·  Rules & Etiquette
Week 1 — Golf Is a Game with Rules

Why rules matter and where golf’s rules came from

Rules in golf are not just there to punish people who make mistakes. Rules also protect players — they make sure no one has an unfair advantage.

A rule that says you can’t move your ball to a better spot protects the player whose ball IS in a difficult spot. A rule about how far apart players must stand protects everyone from distraction. A rule about not touching the putting green in a certain way protects the surface for everyone who plays after you.

Think of golf rules as something that works for you, not against you. They create the conditions where skill and effort can be fairly tested.

When everyone follows the same rules, the best golfer wins. Not the luckiest, not the sneakiest — the best.

The Rule

Key idea: Rules protect every player equally. They make sure that skill — not luck or cheating — decides who plays best.

Assignment

Look through the first few pages of an actual USGA Rules of Golf book or the free USGA Rules app. Find one rule you think is interesting or surprising. Read it with your parent. Write it in your own words in your golf journal and explain why you think that rule exists.
