Lesson 1: The Spirit of the Game

Stage 1 — Discover & Play  ·  Rules & Etiquette
Week 6 — Being a Good Golfer

Putting it all together — rules, etiquette, and character

Golf has something called the spirit of the game — a phrase that refers to the deeper values behind all the rules and etiquette.

The spirit of the game means: play honestly, treat others with respect, take care of the course, and compete with a good attitude. It means that how you play matters as much as what you score.

The rulebook has a preface that talks about this directly. It says that golf has relied on the integrity of each individual to show consideration for other players and to abide by the rules.

A golfer who follows the rules to the letter but is rude, slow, and careless has missed the point. A golfer who occasionally makes a mistake but always plays honestly and treats others with respect has captured the spirit of the game perfectly.

The Rule

The spirit of golf: Play honestly. Respect others. Care for the course. Compete with a good attitude. These are not rules — they are values.

Talk about it

Think of a golfer you admire — a professional, or someone you know personally. What is it about the way they play or carry themselves that you admire? Is it their score, or something else?

Assignment

Write your own ‘Spirit of Golf’ statement — a paragraph or a set of five principles that describes how YOU want to play golf. It should reflect what you have learned about rules, etiquette, honesty, and respect. Sign it and date it. This is your personal golf code. Read it before every round.
